Free Exchange (EAS) for webOS

I’m a GoogleMail user, for calendar, contacts and so on. And since the beginning of my Palm experience I used that standard way how webOS handles GMail. If you setup your GMail Account, webOS will setup it as IMAP-Account.

But there are some disadvantages, you cannot see your labels (now it should be, if you turn on Google Labs support). IMAP Idle (a.k.a. Push) is a battery sucker. Where the Exchange Push is not, at least what I’ve seen so far, for me.

So I search for some Exchange providers to test this out. And my opinion is, I stay with Google, because all have some sentences in their Terms of Service how they handle your data that are the same or near the same as Google. And its free! Works without any problems for me for a few weeks now, and I decided to show you how you can set up you GMail Account as Exchange-Account in webOS.

You need a GoogleMail Account for this, sign-up at http://mail.google.com

If you have already a GMail Account setup as IMAP account (if not, you can skip this step):

First you need to delete (if setup) you GMail-IMAP Account from your webOS phone. Also check if your contacts and calendar account are removed from your device.

After that you can follow the following little tutorial.
(Do this at your own risk! For me it has worked without any problems, but if you lose data, it is not my fault!)

  1. Start Mail
  2. Choose “Preferences & Accounts” from the Top-Menu
  3. Tap “Add new Account
  4. Choose “Manual Setup” from the Top-Menu
  5. Type in the following settings:
    1. Mail Type: Exchange (EAS)
    2. E-Mail address: your-mail-address@googlemail.com
    3. Incoming Mail Server: https://m.google.com
    4. Domain: leave empty
    5. Username: your-mail-address@googlemail.com
    6. Password: your password for your GMail Account
  6. Tap “Sign In
  7. You’re setup!

After some setup and synchronization (it may take a little) your account should be ready for use with your webOS device. Your calendar and also your contacts are setup already! No need to take this extra step.

Also Push-Mail should be setup, so if the GMail server receives a Mail it will immediately forward this to your webOS device!

Have fun!
