AppCatalog approval was so fast for our next update for Headlines Version 1.0.1 that we even had no time to post something about the changes.
So if you not already saw it, Version 1.0.1 was approved by HP on Saturday to the catalog, 24 hours after we submitted the update. Awesome job HP!
Changelog:
(fix) load timeout on app start
(new) more themes, Headlines includes 3 new themes
Old Newspaper
Red
Retro Style
(enhance) when a mobilizer (default) is activated, the article view is now themed as well, should look much better now. (This doesn’t work when no mobilizer is used, but we recommend always use one)
(enhance) you can now sort the topics for custom searches and also the Google default topics like you want it. Simply tap&hold a topic item in the preferences to move it up or down. (default Google topics will always be displayed first)
(add) quickly switch font-sizes in inline-article-view for the current article
(add) Power-scroll in article inline-view to jump to the top or bottom of the currently viewing article.
(add) Power-swipe in main view, to jump quickly from the left-most-pane to the right and vice versa.
(fix) German translation, some typo, more strings translated
This enhancements and fixes are currently only in the full version of Headlines. The bug fixes will of course be implemented in the Lite version also in a few days. But to differentiate the two versions a little more the above add/enhance list will not be available in the lite version.
If you want to try out Headlines lite, grab the free version here (AppCatalog).
I think it’s time to give you some hints to work even quicker with the app and show you some tips.
Access Quick Preferences with a Meta tap (Gesture Area tap) & P to open the Preferences even quicker, without opening the AppMenu first and then tap on the Preferences list item
Read Later options (Instapaper & Read it Later) are configured in the Preferences (not the context menu)
As an advice, always use a mobilizer if you’re using the webView (in App)
most of the news pages have crappy redirect URL and Javascript enabled that the webOS inline webView cannot handle properly
Tap&Hold a topic to open the context menu directly
if you found an interesting topic, there is no need to open the story first and share/read later in the context menu. You can get to this quicker if you simply tap&hold on a story
To reduce the size of the context menu, enable only the apps you really use
if there is only one Twitter app activated, no submenu is generated and you save a tap when sharing a topic.
When viewing an article inline, use Power-Scroll to quickly jump to the top or bottom of the current article.
You can also jump quickly from the first news pane to the last and vice versa with Power-Swipe. Works the same way as Power-Scroll (2-finger flick) but from left-to-right and right-to-left.
Maybe some of them are already known by you, but at least there are written here for people who don’t know it.
Let me introduce a new app that I just submitted to Palm HP AppCatalog.
It’s called Headlines and will be available in two flavours.
I developed gNews Headlines, because I often find myself, having some time, waiting for the bus, train, whatever.
So Headlines was born, it’s an app that provides you with time-sensitive news (from Google News). But only the headlines from Google aren’t enough for me. So I decided to also add a keyword search on news, so that I can have all my favorite (e.g. “hp webOS”) topics I want in the news always visible.
I also wanted to save a story for later reading or share it with friends, so Instapaper and Read It Later integration was a no-brainer.
Since I’m often on a slow network, I also integrated the feature to read the stories via Google Mobilizer or Instapaper Mobilizer (to be honest, Instapaper Mobilizer is much better than G’s one!)
So design was the only hard decision, but since I like the way Dave did the Metro UI (WP7) in Phnx, I give it a try, and I think this UI fits perfectly for such an app!
Headlines is an app that fetches Google News feeds to provide you with the latest news available all around the web. It shows all the standard available Google News feeds and allows you to add your own custom keyword based feeds.
Features:
enable & disable al available standard Google News feeds
add as many custom Google News feeds based on keywords
In-App view of headlines with Google Mobilizer/Instapaper Mobilizer support for better readability
Support for 36 local news feeds available (see full list below)
Send articles directly to Instapaper or Read it Later (both require separate account)
Share stories via Mail, Facebook, Messaging, different Twitter apps (completely customizable)
Context Menu (Tap&Hold) an article to access sharing options without opening story
different themes
As I mentioned above, there will be two versions. A full version and a lite version. The lite version has only one limitation. You can only set one custom search to the default feeds. All the other Pro features are also available.
And if you like the lite version think about support development and buy the pro version.
Expect these two versions soon, maybe this week in the catalog already.
In the meantime have a look at this video that should give you an overview of the app. It was recorded a while ago while in early beta, so not all features are visible in the video that were added during the development process. But it should give you the idea…
